The Ministry of Education has included early arts and physical education in the school curriculum because they know that it’s these classes that inspire students. Physical education and excellence in sports allow our kids to exercise key skills like teamwork, outside of the classroom, while learning the importance of healthy physical activity. The truth is that the general health of children and youth is becoming a national concern: only 14% of Ontario children and youth meet the physical activity guideline of 90 minutes of physical activity per day. Specialist teachers enrich our kids' educational experience and support a broader range of extracurricular activities. They contribute not only to student achievement, but also to broader student development and success.
But, we don’t have enough funding to ensure all elementary schools are supported by specialist teachers to teach these subjects. It’s time we get these teachers back into Ontario elementary schools.
